Established by Congress in 1939 under title 14, §§ 23 of the U.S. Code, the
United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the volunteer uniformed component of the
U.S. Coast Guard. One of the newest missions the Auxiliary has engaged in is cybersecurity.
The Flotilla is the basic organizational unit of the Auxiliary and is comprised of at least 15 qualified members who carry out the day-to-day missions of "Team Coast Guard". Every Auxiliary member is part of a Flotilla.
Flotilla 22-12 was stood up on 21 April 2023 in the
Fifth District Southern Region as an innovative Coast Guard Auxiliary unit based out of Fort Meade, Maryland established with the primary purpose to recruit and retain cybersecurity professionals to support the Coast Guard's missions in the cyber domain.
The Flotilla welcomes all that meet the
Auxiliary criteria for membership, but encourages those with interest in supporting its core cybersecurity mission to join. If you are interested in participating in the other missions of the Auxiliary (either in lieu of or in addition to cybersecurity), you are encouraged to
join a local Flotilla near you.
Are you interested in joining this exciting new unit?If you are a cybersecurity professional and interested in joining the Auxiliary and put your cybersecurity expertise to use in supporting the Coast Guard and the Nation, please submit an
initial interest form. A team member will reach out to you to discuss opportunities.
What is the same and what is different about this Flotilla? The Cyber Flotilla operates the same as any "normal" Flotilla with a few exceptions. All members have the same rights and responsibilities as other Auxiliarists. They must abide by all pertinent regulations and Commandant Instructions. Some variations do include:
- Members are encouraged to join from anywhere a traditional Flotilla may exist (and a few places one might not). Meeting and most training will be conducted remotely.
- Member training for the unit will focus on general training (Auxiliary Core Training and other mandatory training) and cybersecurity training.
- Many appointed positions related to mission areas that the Flotilla does not focus on will not be appointed.
What will I be able to do after I join?Leveraging the AUXCYBER program, joining the Cyber Flotilla will provide volunteer service opportunities as an Auxiliarist to support Coast Guard Cyber Command with achieving the
USCG Cyber Strategic Outlook and support the mission to:
- Defend Coast Guard Cyberspace: Operate and maneuver the Coast Guard Enterprise Mission Platform to assure Coast Guard mission execution in all domains, while aggressively defending our part of the DoD Information Network (DODIN)
- Enable Coast Guard Operations: Enable Coast Guard operations at sea, in the air, on land and space by delivering effects in and through cyberspace
- Protect Maritime Transportation System (MTS): Protect maritime critical infrastructure by delivering effects and capabilities in and through cyberspace
